Devotion to Christ

Matthew 16:24-28 (ESV)
24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done. 28 Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

If we are to follow Christ we must be devoted to Him. He must be first in our life, with nothing coming before Him. The very nature of Christ demands that He be of first importance in all things that we think and do.

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. (1Co 10:31)

There is no area of your life that Christ doesn’t lay claim to. There’s no corner of your mind that you can keep from Him. We are called to do all things to the glory of God. Not only are we called to do everything to the glory of God, but we are also called to go about our business as rendering service to the Lord rather than to men. In Ephesians we see an example of this with reference to wives and slaves. As it is written…

Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. (Eph 5:22)

Slaves, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, with a sincere heart, as you would Christ, not by the way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but as servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to man, (Eph 6:5-7)

So we see that devotion to the Lord means that we have Him in the primary place in all areas of our life, we have Him as the motivation for all things in our life, and we have His glory as the goal for all that we do.
